Advanced Geotechnical Grout Solutions for Tunnels & Seismic

KM Materials specializes in engineering advanced compressible, rebounding grout technology designed for extreme geotechnical environments, including tunnels, fault zones, and seismic ground movement. Our patented KM22 mix design is formulated to absorb stress, resist deformation, and enhance long-term infrastructure stability where traditional grout systems fail.

What Is KM22 Compressible Rebounding Grout?

KM22 is a patent-pending compressible grout material engineered to behave fundamentally differently from conventional cementitious or bentonite grouts. Instead of simply hardening into a rigid filler, KM22 is designed to:

  • Absorb dynamic earth pressure and ground movement
  •  Rebound elastically when stress is removed
  • Reduce force transmission to tunnel linings and structural supports
  • Mitigate cracking and deformation under cyclic loads

This unique performance is derived from a scientifically engineered blend of 100% recycled crumb rubber and Portland cement, tailored on a project-specific basis to achieve optimal geotechnical response characteristics.

Why Traditional Grouts Can Fail

Conventional cement and bentonite grouts are widely used for sealing voids, stabilizing soil, and supporting structural elements. However, these rigid, non-rebounding materials can crack, deform, or degrade under squeezing ground pressures, seismic stresses, and fault creep. These failure mechanisms can compromise long-term performance and lead to costly maintenance or repair.

In contrast, KM22 compressible rebound grout is designed specifically to accommodate geotechnical motion while maintaining continuity of support. This helps protect service life and structural integrity in demanding conditions.

Key Performance Attributes of KM22 Material

Engineered Absorption & Rebound

KM22 is formulated to actively absorb compressive forces and release energy without rigid failure, offering a significant advantage in seismic and fault-active regions. Testing has shown increased rebound behavior as compressive loads rise, a characteristic not observed in traditional grouts.

Sustainable and Project-Specific

The grout is made from 100% recycled crumb rubber, reducing environmental impact and offering custom mix ratios to suit specific structural requirements, such as load deformation tolerance and rebound response.

Designed Low Compressive Strength

KM22’s engineered low compressive strength (≤ 250 psi by design) allows it to absorb stress rather than transfer it to tunnel walls, linings, or surrounding ground structures, protecting engineered systems over time.

Applications of KM22 Rebounding Grout

KM22 is optimized for use in projects where ground movement and earth pressures present a challenge for conventional materials:

  • Underground tunnels (rail, road, subway) where fault creep and seismic loads are significant
  • Fault zones and squeezing ground conditions requiring motion-accommodating grout
  • Geotechnical sealing and stabilization in variable stress environments
  • Long-term structural resilience of subsurface infrastructure

This positions KM22 as a technical grout choice for engineers, geotechnical designers, and infrastructure specifiers seeking scientifically validated material performance.

Technical Validation & Testing

KM22 has been reviewed and evaluated through laboratory tests, including compression and rebound behavior, conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Detailed testing encompasses:

  • Unconfined and confined compressive strength assessment
  • Cyclic load rebound characterization
  • Wave velocity tests relevant to seismic energy transmission

These data reinforce KM22’s engineered performance advantages over standard grout formulations.

Experience & Commitment

With over 50 combined years of experience in construction materials and geotechnical solutions, KM Materials delivers high-quality, scientifically documented grout systems designed to meet the evolving needs of infrastructure projects in challenging conditions.
